WBC sanctions Deontay Wilder vs. Tyson Fury rematch

The WBC wants to see the rematch between Deontay Wilder and Tyson Fury sooner rather than later.

President of the World Boxing Council, Mauricio Sulaiman, has revealed that a vote has already been held which resulted in a unanimous agreement to sanction an immediate rematch between Wilder and Fury after last week's controversial split draw. The 115-111 scorecard in favour of 'The Bronze Bomber', which came from Mexican judge Alejandro Rochin, in particular, didn't sit well with the majority of fans who felt that Fury had done enough to dethrone Wilder despite the two knockdowns in the latter stages of the fight. At the time of writing, Dominic Breazeale remains the mandatory challenger for the WBC heavyweight title held by Wilder while Dillian Whyte is also on the cusp of a title shot but the organisation has seen sense and given the green light to a direct rematch to settle the score.   "The World Boxing Council conducted a voting through the Board of Governors, which resulted in a unanimous agreement to sanction a direct rematch between WBC heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder and Tyson Fury," Sulaiman said. "Wilder and Fury gave boxing one of the best fights in the heavyweight division in a long time, which has created tremendous popular demand for the fans to see a rematch. The WBC is happy to confirm that a direct rematch has been approved and will create in a ruling which will also consider the mandatory status of the division. "I wish to once again congratulate Deontay Wilder and Tyson Fury for their great battle inside the ring and for the exemplary sportsmanship after the bout."
