Antoine Griezmann tells everyone to “calm down” over ‘Harlem Globetrotters’ fancy dress, then he deletes

You think you know a situation.

You think it's a formula by now: sportsperson says/does/posts something controversial; outrage ensues; apology arrives. Then it's basically just up to the masses to decide whether or not they're happy with the apology. Well, our prediction that Antoine Griezmann's apology was only moments away was initially so wide of the mark it might as well have been playing for Ireland against Griezmann. His fancy dress costume on Sunday night blew up on social media, so much so that it seemed there'd be only two more logical conclusions:

• Delete
• Apology

That's usually what happens but Griezmann stood his ground one last time before eventually following the pattern. After the shitshow that followed his post, the Frenchman hit back on the same platform calling for calm, that it was just a tribute to the Harlem Globetrotters.

"Calm down guys, I'm fan of the Harlem globetrotters and the good times... it's a tribute," he tweeted.

That tweet was soon deleted. Eventually, he did own up to the idea that it might've been a little ill-advised as he deleted both previous posts and then asked for pardon.

"I agree that it's awkward for me. If I hurt some people excuse me," Griezmann tweeted.
