Then it happened. Two quick-fire stoppage time goals from Rodrygo pulled the newly crowned Spanish champions level, sending the game to extra-time, where a Karim Benzema penalty settled the contest.

It was an absolute sickener for City,
especially after Jack Grealish had nearly put the game beyond doubt before Madrid's incredible comeback.
Madrid will now face Liverpool, who avoided a scare of their own in Spain the previous night.
Having beaten Villarreal 2-0 at Anfield, a spirited first-half display by Unai Emery's side saw Jurgen Klopp's men pegged back to 2-2 on aggregate. Liverpool overcame the setback after the interval, but Jamie Carragher - on punditry duty for CBS Sport - was clearly worried.

A little over 24 hours later, Richards almost certainly wasn't laughing after watching his old team crumble in the final minutes.

The setback for City means the wait for a first European Cup goes on. They can, however, deny Liverpool a quadruple by winning their remaining Premier League fixtures.
The challenge for Guardiola will be picking his team up after such a devastating defeat.
