But his reaction to Villarreal's injury time winner in a 1-0 victory in the first leg of the Europa League semi-final hasn't gone down very well amongst viewers of BT Sport's coverage of the game.
McManaman wasn't in magnanimous mood as he bemoaned the result, arguing that Liverpool were far superior to their Iberian counterparts, and shouldn't have lost to the supposedly lesser La Liga side.
"I don't think they're very good," McManaman told BT Sport.
"I think if Liverpool showed any positivity and the game flows like it did today, and with the magnificent crowd at Anfield, Liverpool should run all over them."
