Bizarre injury threatens Glenn Whelan’s proud Premier League record

Glenn Whelan appears to have joined football's oddest injury hall of shame.

The Republic of Ireland midfielder may not have crocked himself with an iron-boarding, hello Michael Stensgaard, but his back injury is not exactly your standard footballer problem. The defensive enforcer is likely to miss Sunday's clash with Liverpool after the Stoke medical team issued an update on his fitness on Wednesday afternoon. According to assistant manager Mark Bowen, the 32-year-old's back has been in spasm since he hurt himself getting out his car last week.

“He did it, very simply, getting out of his car. People who have had bad backs will tell you how it can happen. “He didn’t do anything untoward; he just got out of the car and felt something crack in his back. “That was it. It’s the luck we’ve been having with injuries. Tell me about it.”

We can't imagine Whelan was awkwardly getting out of a Lamborghini last week, but whatever his mode of transport, let's hope the injury doesn't recur at this summer's Euros Whelan is ever-present for his club this season, but his injury is likely to put his 100% starting record for the Potters in the Premier League into doubt this week ahead of the trip to Anfield.
