Harry Kane praises Matt Doherty’s performance as Spurs hammer Everton

Doherty helped Kane surpass Thierry Henry's Premier League goalscoring tally.

Harry Kane was full of praise for Matt Doherty following the Irishman's two assists during Tottenham Hotspur's 5-0 victory over Everton on Monday night. The Dublin native has been in sublime form in recent weeks and appears to have nailed down the right wing-back position under  Spurs boss Antonio Conte.

Doherty played a perfectly weighted through ball in the 37th minute to unlock Everton's defence before Kane ran through and placed his reverse shot past Jordan Pickford into the net. The England captain gave a glowing account of the Irish international's performance after full-time following Doherty's excellent contribution. “Great ball from Doughie (Doherty) there (to put) me one on one with the keeper and I’ll always back myself," Kane said to Sky Sports as he detailed Doherty's first assist. Doherty's second assist came after 55 minutes as he picked out Kane with a dinked pass to the far post. The England international fired a superb volley back across Pickford's goal into the far corner to make it 5-0 to Spurs. Doherty's Spurs resurgence.

The 30-year-old was an attacking force for Wolves before his £16m move to Spurs in 2020. Following his move, Doherty struggled to replicate his form for the London club. In recent weeks, however, the wing-back has had the opportunity to play in his preferred position under Conte. Doherty has started consecutive games for Spurs for the first time since Mourinho was in charge. Tottenham have scored nine goals and conceded none in that time. The Irish international has scored one and assisted three in the last two Premier League games as Conte's side aim to finish in the top four.
