"I know Christian, he's a good friend,” Byrne told RTÉ in December 2021 when he returned to Shamrock Rovers.
"He knows the type of player I am, he knows the environment that I'd do well in.
"Charlotte are a new franchise, just been set up, so maybe the timing wasn't great on that one. Who knows? Someday maybe it'll come around again.”
The Irish Examiner report that Byrne could triple his wages with a move to Charlotte FC, who are currently ninth in the Eastern Conference in the American league.
Charlotte are an expansion team who joined MLS in the 2022 season.
They play their matches at the Bank of America Stadium and had an average attendance of over 35,000 last season.
Charlotte didn't reach the playoffs, however, and finished in ninth place in the Eastern Conference.
Byrne, who has earned four caps for Ireland, rejoined Rovers for a second stint at the end of 2021 after a short spell with APOEL Nicosia in Cyprus.
The midfielder helped the Dublin side win the league title last year. He was named PFAI Player of the Year in 2019 and 2020.
