Jamie Carragher blasts Liverpool’s “stupid” penalty takers for League Cup loss

Jamie Carragher won three League Cups as a Liverpool player and two of those came in penalty shoot-outs.

So the ex-Liverpool defender should know a thing or two about selecting the right men to step up from 12 yards in a pressure situation. But he was not impressed by Liverpool’s four selected takers for tonight’s dramatic finale to the League Cup final against Manchester City. The ex-centre-half raged as Lucas, Philippe Coutinho, Adam Lallana and, Emre Can were the four to take spot kicks. Daniel Sturridge did not appear to be among those preparing for penalties, and Carragher was baffled by his seeming exclusion.

"He had cramp towards the end, but unless he’s got an injury, I don’t know why he’s not taking a penalty. “I don’t know why someone like Lucas is taking the second penalty. You want your best penalty takers [first], you think they’d be more chance of Daniel Sturridge scoring than Lucas Leiva. "The fact that a penalty shootout has gone on and Daniel Sturridge hasn’t taken one for Liverpool is stupid.”
