File this under football plot twists. Brentford's summer move to appoint Keith Andrews raised eyebrows. Fans and pundits shared a mix of surprise and scepticism. Old video clips of Roy Keane calling the Dubliner "one of the best bulls***ters" quickly resurfaced online.
Andrews' first weeks in charge have been a rollercoaster. Brentford impressed in the Carabao Cup with two convincing wins. Yet their Premier League form has been uneven: four points from five matches, three defeats, a draw with Chelsea and a win over Aston Villa. With every result, debate about the appointment has grown louder.
Given their history, some expected Keane to pile on. Instead, on the latest episode of 'Stick to Football', he urged patience.
"They don't look like they will panic, Brentford. I think Brentford can be the type of club that can lose a few games (and remain steady).
"I think they’re capable of getting a result against Man United, yeah. At home to United? I think they’re capable of getting a result.
"He's new to the job. Like any young manager, give the man a chance. They've played five (league games)"
When asked if Andrews' hiring shocked him, Keane replied "Not really, because he was already in the club. He wouldn't have got another Premier League job anywhere else, but the people there must think highly of him."
The real intrigue lies in the messenger. Keane and Andrews share a colourful past, yet the Corkman stays consistent on one point: managers need time. He has preached it for years, and he's sticking to it.
