Miguel Delaney of the Independent, the Manchester United hierarchy are considering Laurent Blanc as a potential stand-in until the end of the season.
Manchester United announced the departure of Mourinho two days after a crushing 3-1 defeat to Liverpool which left the club 19 points behind their league-leading rivals.
Mourinho signed a new contract in the summer of 2018, but the club's form this season - and particularly in recent weeks - has clearly convinced the Old Trafford hierarchy that a change is necessary.
The next favourite for the position is former Real Madrid manager Zinedine Zidane, whose only managerial spell was a hugely successful one at Real Madrid.
