Jurgen Klopp made six changes to his side, with usual starters Andy Robertson, Virgil Van Dijk, Trent Alexander-Arnold, and Mo Salah all losing their place.
A goalless first half saw Chelsea have a handful of decent chances, particularly from Joao Felix and Kai Havertz, but Liverpool came close as well from a well struck Fabinho shot.
Havertz did manage to find the net in the second half, but it was ruled out for handball by VAR and despite the home side having more of the ball, Liverpool took confidence from all of their opposition's misses.
James Milner entered the fray and in doing so took over Frank Lampard in the all-time Premier League appearances, meaning that only Ryan Giggs and Gareth Barry have made more.
In the end neither team could manage to make the breakthrough, and it finished 0-0.
