Having successfully not gone through with a deal for the player, Lindelöf is free to stay put in Lisbon for the next six to 18 months, going on to sign for someone like Zenit St Petersburg or maybe even a team in Spain that isn't Barcelona or Real Madrid when his time with Benfica eventually comes to an end.
According to the BBC, José Mourinho withdrew his (quite possibly non-existent) interest in the player due to the excellent form of Phil Jones and Marcos Rojo in the heart of the United defence.
