Peter Beardsley leaves Newcastle United after facing investigation

Peter Beardsley has left his coaching role at Newcastle United, the club has confirmed. The 58-year-old had been in charge of the club's Under 23 side but was suspended in January 2018 as he was investigated over allegations of racism and bullying, which he strongly denied through his solicitor. Reports at the time claimed winger Yasin Ben El-Mhanni - now with Scunthorpe United - lodged a complaint against Beardsley and that further accusations were made against the former England international, who also made over 300 appearances for Newcastle during his playing career. An official statement from Newcastle, released on Wednesday afternoon, confirmed his departure but did not state whether it was linked to the investigation.

'Newcastle can confirm that Peter Beardsley is no longer employed by the club,' the statement read. 'We are grateful for the contribution Peter has given over the years as a player, coach and ambassador and we wish him well for the future. 'The club will make no further comment at this time.'

The allegations made against Beardsley were not the first time he had been accused of bullying.
