The award was first handed-out in 1991, and makes a return this year.
Between 2010 and 2015, it merged with the Ballon d'Or to become the FIFA Ballon d'Or.
However, France Football, the magazine that bestows the Ballon d'Or, and FIFA have gone their separate ways. The 2016 Ballon d'Or was awarded to Cristiano Ronaldo, and FIFA will hand-out their award on January 9.
