Gareth McAuley agrees deal to join Rangers until end of the season

Rangers have officially signed Northern Ireland international defender Gareth McAuley on a free transfer.

The 38-year-old has agreed a deal with the Glasgow giants that will see him at the club through to the end of the season. McAuley has been a free agent since leaving West Brom in the summer following their relegation from the premier league. The Larne native had spent six seasons with the Baggies. The former Ipswich man spoke of his desire to play for Rangers, the club he has supported since childhood.

McAuley told Rangers TV, " The opportunity to come and play at this famous club is amazing,"  "My family support the club, myself as well. The street I was born on, the kerbs were painted red, white and blue."

The 79 time capped international has been a regular fixture in the premier league, and represented Northern Ireland at Euro 2016, so he will add a wealth of top level experience to Steven Gerrard's side.

"There's a young group of players here," he said. "I want to help develop them and also challenge them to play in the team." "Speaking to the manager in the last week or so, that's something I can bring to the project." McAuley said. 

There is no doubting McAuley will be a huge asset to Steven Gerrard as he looks to bring success back to Rangers, it's just a pity for them he wasn't available for selection yesterday.
