Rangers fans fly plane banner over Celtic game as title slips away

After so long, Rangers fans couldn't resist.

Rangers ended their decade-long wait to be champions of Scotland and end a Celtic dynasty in the process. A 3-0 win over St Mirren at Ibrox on Saturday saw Steven Gerrard's side needing just one more point to confirm their status as champions. Old Firm rivals Celtic, who trailed Rangers by 21 points after Saturday's win, needed to avoid dropping points in their game at Dundee United on Sunday to prolong Rangers's wait. With the game underway at Tannadice, a plane was spotted in the skies above the stadium, towing along a banner with a message from Rangers' supporters.

"Can you see us now?! #55titles," the banner read.

Rangers' win over St Mirren all but extinguished any faint flicker of hope that Celtic might miraculously complete a 10th consecutive league title, ahead of the Old Firm, which takes place at Celtic Park on March 21. As it turned out, the game at Tannadice ended in a goalless draw. They are now 20 points behind with only six games to play. "Congratulations to Rangers," said former Celtic and Ireland goalkeeper Packie Bonner on BBC Scotland, "but from a Celtic perspective, they've been absolutely dreadful. They played well today but haven't put up a title challenge in any shape or form."
