Wilkins had struggled with poor health for several years but was believed to be doing better after undergoing a successful double heart bypass operation last year.
The former Chelsea, Manchester United and AC Milan midfielder remains a popular figure in football and well-wishes have been flooding in for Wilkins, who turned 61 in September.
Ray’s son Ross Wilkins told the Daily Mail: "I hope everyone can respect the family’s wishes over privacy at this very difficult time for us. It’s touch and go whether my father will get through this."Explore more on these topics:
