Wednesday boss Carlos Carvalhal revealed he previously tried to sign McGeady back when the winger was at Celtic and he was manager of Sporting Lisbon.
“He is a player that adds extra quality and a player I know very, very well because when he played at Celtic, I was coach of Sporting and I tried to bring him to the club but it was not possible at that moment.
Carvalhal also explained that being part of the Ireland squad at Euro 2016 was a motivating factor for McGeady.
“He has a big personal challenge because he wants to be at the Euros with his national team and to us, this kind of player is important because they are hungry to play,” he said.
Maybe McGeady thought a move to Spain might put him that bit too far away from Martin O'Neill and Roy Keane's gaze.
Or else he thought a few months of looking good in the Championship may be just the ticket for a place in Ireland's starting XI.Explore more on these topics:
