Troy Parrott misses controversial penalty as Tottenham dumped out

The teenage striker put his hand up and backed himself, but Tim Krul takes some beating.

Troy Parrott will wear this one for a while but the save that denied him was highly dubious. Tottenham have been eliminated from the FA Cup at the fifth round stage after losing to Norwich 3-2 on penalties after a 1-1 draw. Spurs went 1-0 in front after Jan Vertonghen's 13th minute goal but Norwich pegged their hosts back with a Josip Drmić goal after Michael Vorm had failed to deal with a long-range effort on goal. Many Spurs fans had been chanting for Parrott to enter the fray at a much earlier stage and, with the game heading to extra time, they finally got their wish. Parrott's low drive was parried away by Krul during extra time and it was the closest either side got to winning it in that extra 30 minutes. That was as good as it got. Erik Lamela pinged the top of the crossbar with his penalty miss and Ireland U21 striker Adam Idah - scorer of a hat-trick earlier in the competition - tucked his spot-kick away. Giovani lo Celso (Spurs) and Marco Stiepermann (Norwich) scored next and it was 2-2 when Parrott, who had told boss Jose Mourinho that he wanted to take a penalty, stepped up. One of the linesmen was standing on the end-line, mere yards away, and surely would have seen the Dutch goalkeeper stray from his line. Still, not a word was said and the save stood. Troy Parrott was too crestfallen to complain but Vorm did approach the referee and ask for a re-take. His request was ignored and the shoot-out continued. Todd Cantwell made it 3-2 to Norwich and it was left to Gedson Fernandes to bring the shoot-out to sudden death. The Portuguese midfielder's spot-kick was tame and Krul read him correctly. The goalkeeper streaked off as his side's first FA Cup quarter final in 28 years was sealed. Following the game, Mourinho bizarrely used the moment to relate how he felt Parrott had struggled for his 30 minutes of extra time. "Now people can see that he has to work a lot," Mourinho said, "so don't think that Parrott is the second Harry Kane because he's just a young kid that needs to work." On the miss, he was more forgiving:

"The penalty is nothing. He is a penalty taker in the under-23s, he scores every one in the unders. He was so confident, he wanted to take one, he wanted to take the responsibility, it's an experience in his career. The problem is not his experience."
