And on the Lille streets, two of the most recognisable faces of the national team's past didn't want the night to end.
Former Republic of Ireland manager Brian Kerr and former international Ronnie Whelan spent the hours following the 1-0 victory celebrating with supporters as the sun came up.
Renditions of 'With or Without You' and 'Man in the Mirror' echoed around Lille and, although Kerr seemed to be getting more involved than Whelan, both definitely enjoyed their sing-song.
