VINE: Shameful scenes in Greece as Olympiakos v AEK Athens is abandoned in the 88th minute due to fan violence

Greek football seems about as safe as brushing your teeth with a hatchet.

The latest incident to mar the sport in Greece came in the domestic cup this evening when the game had to be abandoned late on. Division two leaders AEK Athens hosted the first division leaders Olympiakos at the Olympiako Stadio Spyros Louis in the second leg of the quarter-final. With the tie level at 1-1 from the first game, Olympiakos looked to have claimed victory with a Franco Jara goal in the 88th minute. That prompted a violent pitch invasion as a group of around 20 AEK fans took to the field, throwing missiles at the Olympiakos players. The referee rightly made the the decision to call the game off and the decision was made that Olympiakos would automatically qualify for the semi-final.

The crowd trouble came just a week after the Greek Super League got back underway last week following a one-week suspension, again as a result of fan violence.
