Rooney's last appearance for England came in November 2016 in a 3-0 victory over Scotland.
He made his debut against Australia at West Ham's former stadium Upton Park in 2003 and scored his first goal in 2004 against Macedonia.
England's record goalscorer (53) has just finished his first season with new side DC United in MLS.
His arrival in June prompted an enormous reversal of fortunes for the side, who were bottom of the Eastern Conference when he joined.
He scored 12 goals and laid on seven assists after joining as the Washington-based team clinched a playoff place. He also won the October player of the month award.
Unfortunately, the fairytale ended this week as Rooney missed a penalty in a 3-2 penalty shootout defeat to the Columbus Crew in the MLS playoffs.
