Confusion reigned in Pennsylvania as USGA officials could not come to a definitive decision on the course about whether or not they would penalise Dustin Johnson for an alleged grounding of his putter on the 5th green.
Johnson went on to claim a three-shot victory due in no small part to a succession of three-putts from Lowry on the back nine.
And as Johnson took home the winner's purse of €1.8 million (€1,586,881), Lowry was forced to share second spot with Jim Furyk and Scott Piercy.
The result means that Lowry takes home earnings of $745,270 (€657,030) according to the purse breakdown of Bleacher Report.
That payout does not take into consideration any sponsorship money that the 29-year-old will earn from main sponsors Bank of Ireland or his several others Bonnington Group, Srixon, McGettigan’s, Simply Golf, and Kartel.
