Open leader Shane Lowry hailed by commentator as British

The Brits, they're at it again.

Over the years they've claimed Katie Taylor, Colin Farrell and now it seems like its Shane Lowry's turn. The Offaly native entered the third day of the Open tied for first place at -8 under after shooting back-to-back round scores of 67 at Royal Portrush. Sky Sports' Laura Davies is the latest British broadcaster to try and claim ownership of an Irish star despite Lowry leading the Open throughout the first two days. https://twitter.com/kaneclarke/status/1152582630715645953

"It'd be lovely for the home fans and for us as well," commented Davies. "It'd be nice to see a British winner at the Open. The Americans have been way too dominant recently at these majors."

If Lowry can pull clear at the top of the leaderboard and hold his lead through the weekend he will become the first Irishman to win the Open since Padraig Harrington at Royal Birkdale in 2008. Lowry said that he's been delighted with how he's fared throughout the opening two days in Antrim and added that he's now in a great position to secure his first major win after finishing second at the US Open in 2016.

"I can't explain how good the crowds were, a day that I'll remember," he told RTE. "Walking down 18 was something special. I'm a bit disappointed to bogey the last but I'm right where I wanted to be and delighted with my two days' work. "I'm in a great position going into the weekend of an Open Championship but there's two long days left. There are times when it's not going to be easy and I've just got to take it on the chin."
