His ascension through the leaderboard since that sixth hole on Thursday has been phenomenal, as he now lies just four shots off the lead that is jointly held by Jordan Speith and Matt Kuchar.
McIlroy enjoyed a seven shot turnaround as he rampaged up the leaderboard from five-over after six holes, to two under after 24.
The 28-year-old notched birdies at the first, third and sixth holes to get his Friday round off to a blistering start.
McIlroy was straight and precise off the tee, and he was regularly hitting the target with his approach shots.
He finished up with a 68 and entered the clubhouse at one-under-par.
He'll be hoping for a big moving day.
Don't write him off just yet.
