Conor McGregor corrects RTÉ reporter who didn’t refer to him as UFC featherweight champion

So it looks like that UFC army has yet to pop down to Casa de Conor to collect that featherweight belt.

Make no mistake about the fact that Conor McGregor still considers himself the reigning UFC featherweight champion, in spite of what his employers might want you to accept. 'The Notorious' became the first fighter in UFC history to hold titles in two different weight classes simultaneously when he mercilessly ripped away Eddie Alvarez's lightweight crown in the main event of UFC 205 and proudly displayed it alongside his 145lbs title. But two weeks hadn't even passed before the UFC made the decision to strip the Irishman of the latter, as they promoted his Brazilian rival Jose Aldo to undisputed world featherweight champion. That move was made so that Max Holloway and Anthony Pettis could fight for the division's interim strap, which Holloway claimed via TKO earlier this month. So there are now two belts at 145lbs and McGregor holds neither of them and, in fact, he's been removed from the featherweight rankings entirely but he's not all that concerned about the shake-up as he remains adamant that he's still a two-weight world champion. Ahead of his acceptance speech for the RTÉ Sportsperson of the Year award, McGregor spoke with reporter Clare McNamara and he made that quite clear when he was introduced as the UFC lightweight champion. https://twitter.com/RTEsport/status/810261934909976577 "Hold on... McGregor had previously said that it would require an army for the organisation to take away one of his hard-earned titles and he still carries around both belts proudly. "Don't mind that!"
