Conor McGregor’s dream of becoming dual champion handed huge boost

It's looking very likely that Conor McGregor will get a chance to become the first UFC fighter to hold two belts simultaneously.

Dana White's eyes almost turned to dollar signs when he admitted that having the Notorious as a dual champion, at featherweight and lightweight, is something that interests him, speaking on Fox Sports 1's UFC Tonight.

"Conor has said that he would like to win the 155-pound belt and fight four times a year and defend both belts. If anybody can do it, Conor McGregor can. This guy has pretty done everything he said he would do. I'm interested."

Traditionally, if a champion wanted to move up or down a weight class, he or she would have to vacate the belt in their current division. Frankie Edgar confirmed on a recent episode of the MMA Hour that this was asked of him when the UFC wanted him to move down to 145 lbs while he held the 155 lb belt.

However, White believes an exception could be made for McGregor.

"That is true that normally I would say if you're going to move up in weight, you have to give up the belt. But Conor has done everything he said he would do. He loves to fight. He really likes money, so if anybody could do it, it's probably him."
