The man in the middle for the epic between England and France was the target for alleged homophobic abuse
For his part in arguably the most thrilling game of rugby ever played referee Nigel Owens was widely applauded after England's win over France on Saturday at Twickenham.
Sadly, it is alleged that one individual was not happy and decided to aim homophobic abuse at the Welsh man. Police in Wales are investigating.
Dyfed-Powys Police released a statement where they said: "Dyfed -Powys Police have launched an investigation into alleged homophobic remarks posted on Twitter which were directed towards rugby referee Nigel Owens, following his refereeing of the England V France rugby international at Twickenham on Saturday. This follows a number of complaints made by members of the public. The Tweet concerned has now been removed from the page. The investigation is at an early stage."
On his last trip to Twickenham, for England against New Zealand in November, Owens received homophobic abuse and before Saturday's game the referee urged fans at the ground not to engage in similar behaviour.
Sadly, it appears that call was not heeded on Twitter.
