Hiddink won the FA Cup in 2009 with the Stamford Bridge outfit and has been without a job since leaving the Netherlands international set-up earlier this year.
Juande Ramos had been mentioned as one of the more likely replacements that owner Roman Abramovich was considering in a bid to drag Chelsea up the table from their current spot, one point above the relegation zone.
But it seems that Abramovich prefers the idea of a familiar stopgap as he assesses the full-time replacement that will likely take charge in the summer with Diego Simeone, Pep Guardiola and Carlo Ancelotti all possible candidates.
