"Manchester United and Louis van Gaal are taking a lot of criticism but the harsh reality is that even Sir Alex Ferguson would struggle to turn this squad into world beaters."
"United are under huge scrutiny after a third successive game without a goal and there is growing pressure on Van Gaal to do what would have been unthinkable a few years back and drop Wayne Rooney. But the simple truth is that Ferguson – one of the greatest managers – would not be walking away with the title with this squad."
Redknapp claims that, to reclaim the glory years of the Ferguson era, that a superstar signing is required at Old Trafford but it's not that easy.
"You would have to go out and sign a Gareth Bale, Lionel Messi, Luis Suárez or Neymar to turn this United team around and those players simply are not available."
The former Spurs and QPR boss also believes that no players from the current squad would make it into the iconic Ferguson teams of the late 1990s and mid-2000s.
"Without being disrespectful, I do not think any of the current United players would get into those Ferguson teams and that should tell you everything about what Van Gaal is working with now. As David Moyes found out, and Van Gaal is discovering, those players simply are not around any more. They are undoubtedly a top-four team but nowhere near good enough to run away with the league."Explore more on these topics:
