You'd expect that Manchester United fans were cock-a-hoop at the appointment of Louis van Gaal back in 2014. They'd just endured a bitterly disappointing season under David Moyes, and Van Gaal was fresh from his heroics at the World Cup.
Looking back, you'd expect that this would be a chance to mock United fans for their misguided joy and giddiness about securing the Dutchman's services. Not so, it seems. In fact there was more than a little doubt about the appointment.
