Jurgen Klopp explains why he sat down for Liverpool’s entire penalty shoot-out

We were expecting histrionics on the sidelines but Jurgen Klopp was nowhere to be seen.

Liverpool's penalty shoot-out win over Stoke, last night went on forever. At least, it felt that way. Throughout the game, the Reds boss was a livewire. He patrolled his technical zone, gesticulated at players and was up and down from his bench as the tension levels soared. Stoke won 1-0 on the night but the scoreline meant an aggregate result of 1-1 and penalties. It took 14 penalties to decide the game's fate, with Liverpool progressing to the final. Klopp admitted he missed most of the penalties and for an entirely noble reason. He told reporters:

"It was a mixture. Usually I want to see but with the first row of the stands, they [the fans] couldn’t see anything."

Klopp added, "I can’t be on my knees for 50 minutes – I had an ACL 20 years ago and it’s still not 100%. That’s why I sat on a chair and you could see nothing. "And it felt good, to be honest, only watching the crowd. In the end, we won without me watching and that’s good."
