Report: Arsenal make last-ditch bid to hijack Jose Mourinho’s Manchester United appointment

Nothing would smack Arsene Wenger harder than the sight of Jose Mourinho taking over all he has built at Arsenal.

The often irascible duo were rarely cordial bed-fellows during their league and cup clashes, with Wenger even losing his cool at Stamford Bridge and shoving Mourinho. The Frenchman could be on his way out of Arsenal soon and, doing their duty as a board, replacement candidates are being vetted. It seems hard to believe that the Gunners would bring in Mourinho but the former Chelsea boss does have a track record of success. Spanish website Fichajes were the first to moot Mourinho to Arsenal and, this morning, Sunday Times reporter Duncan Castles has gone a step further. Castles writes:

 "Mourinho was approached by a third party claiming to represent Arsenal at the beginning of this month, following successive losses to severely understrength Manchester United and Swansea City sides. "The former Chelsea manager was asked if he would be interested in working at Arsenal should Wenger’s position be made vacant, and to hold off on making a decision on other offers until May."

Castles, who was close to the Mourinho camp during his time at Stamford Bridge, also claims that Inter Milan and Roma have both offered Mourinho their top jobs for next season. If, however, Mourinho has signed a pre-contract deal with United, one cannot imagine him going back on it. The truth should out this May.
