Fellow countryman Stam is confident that the 21-year-old will perfectly fit United's playing style. He told MUTV:
"United always want to attack and the club always has an interest in players that have a lot of pace and who can also play the one-vs-ones and create something or score goals. Memphis is that type of player."
"He's proven that in Holland for a couple of seasons now and also with the national team and I think it's a good step for him to join United now, and also work with (manager) Louis van Gaal because he knows him very well of course."
Depay's speed has also been praised by United's celebrated midfielder Paul Scholes who, in his Independent column, mentions another of the Red Devils's ex-Dutchman in his discussion of the latest coup.
"He has scored 21 goals for PSV Eindhoven this season and is the Dutch league’s top goalscorer, which is a good sign. If he can have anything like the kind of impact Ruud van Nistelrooy made, he will be a great success. For some Dutch players, coming to England can be a difficult transition but this lad clearly has promise."And the man who filled the giant boots of Peter Schmeichel, Edwin van der Sar, is also confident that Depay will be able to meet the expectations that is being heaped on him, telling MUTV:
"Depay is not afraid. I think he's also a little bit eager - you don't win the title only with choir boys!
"In that case I think Manchester United has a future star on their hands.
"We've seen a lot of him this season and he's probably one of the main reasons why Ajax are not champions.
"He played tremendously well for PSV and was in the World Cup squad. He had three games - he came on and did well and scored two goals. So he had a lot of confidence coming into the new season.
"Of course he is not the finished product yet - there is still a lot of work on for him - but potentially he is a really good player and I think United have made him a good deal."
