Louis van Gaal replaced a fatigued Bastian Schweinsteiger after 70 minutes and although Daley Blind moved into midfield, United could not retain possession for long enough to relieve pressure or mount meaningful attacks.
Post-match, van Gaal said United should have been in front by half-time but praised his players' spirit early in the second half. He commented, "After then, it was not good anymore. That is remarkable because we have kept the ball in our possession very well in the last five or six matches."
The United boss blames 'the accumulation of matches' over the past month and the Premier League 'rat race' for his players' performance levels dipping. "We have to improve, I said it to the players... Today, we won this game but it could have been in a better way," he added.
