In reality, Wexford are past that stage of targeting the League now. During Fitzgerald's first two year in the sunny-south-east, progress and promotions in the early stages of the year was the aim as they attempted to establish themselves as one of hurling's front-runners.
And on the back of defeating Kilkenny in Leinster in 2017 they announced their arrival to the top table with a big bang. However since then, they just haven't been able to kick on.
Their meek loss to Clare in this season's All-Ireland quarter final made it three years in a row that they'd bowed out at the last eight but it was perhaps the lifeless manner of that performance that fed the speculation that Fitzgerald would call it a day.
