BREAKING: Davy Fitzgerald to stay on as Wexford manager

Brilliant news for the Yellow Bellies.

Wexford GAA PRO PJ Howlin confirmed to SportsJOE on Tuesday morning that Davy Fitzgerald will remain as Wexford manager for the 2019 season. The Clare native took over the Wexford reigns in 2016 on a three year deal and he will in 2019 be heading into a fourth. The Wexford Weekly had reported earlier in the week that Fitzgerald was set to give it one more lash, and those reports were confirmed this morning. Fitzgerald and Wexford endured a frustrating 2018. They enjoyed a couple of good days in the League none-more-so than when they took out Galway in Salthill but it was all too hit and miss in the early stages of the year and as often happens, that inconsistency didn't disappear by the time the championship came around either. In reality, Wexford are past that stage of targeting the League now. During Fitzgerald's first two year in the sunny-south-east, progress and promotions in the early stages of the year was the aim as they attempted to establish themselves as one of hurling's front-runners. And on the back of defeating Kilkenny in Leinster in 2017 they announced their arrival to the top table with a big bang. However since then, they just haven't been able to kick on. Their meek loss to Clare in this season's All-Ireland quarter final made it three years in a row that they'd bowed out at the last eight but it was perhaps the lifeless manner of that performance that fed the speculation that Fitzgerald would call it a day. Never one to shy away from a battle, Fitzgerald is ready to give it a lash again.
