Dan Shanahan scoring tally in Waterford senior club hurling should inspire older players

Dan Shanahan covered so much ground on the sideline during the Waterford seniors' path to the All-Ireland final this year that it's no surprise he's in good nick. Derek McGrath's right hand man was up and down, in and out of the field like a jack-in-the-box in every game, but maybe, maybe he was just trying to keep himself in shape for his club campaign with Lismore. The west Waterford club won the county, and Munster intermediate titles last year, so they obviously fancied themselves to make an assault at the county senior competition this time around. Lismore navigated their way through the opening rounds of the Championship smoothly, and the real business began in Saturday night's quarter-final fixture against Abbeyside. Shanahan's club got off to a flier, and opened up an 8 point gap on the Abbeyside by half-time. Dan the man was on fire. He had 2-1 scored from open play in the opening 25 minutes of the game. That was to go with the six goals he had already scored in the earlier stages of the competition. He now has 8 green flags raised so far in this year's Championship, and will be hoping there is more to come as they march on towards the semi-finals of the competition. That's some going for the big full forward, and it goes to show you, class really is permanent. He may be 40-years of age, but he has the know-how, the strength and the skill. He'd be a tough assignment for any full back.
