Conor McManus was regal for the Farney County as he inspired them to their second Ulster title in three years.
Donegal hit back with five points in the final 15 minutes but could not level it up.
With seconds to go, McBrearty let rip from 35 yards out.
However, the ball started to curl to the right as it neared the uprights.
McBrearty and his teammates were incredulous at the decision but there was no time left on the clock to fashion another scoring chance.
And Monaghan player Vinny Corey even admitted after the game that the shot did indeed go over the bar.

On The Sunday Game, both Ciaran Whelan and Colm O'Rourke suggested that the wide call was extremely close, adding that, without Hawkeye, the umpire's decision has to be upheld and respected.
As for the match itself, Pat Spillane declared, 'Monaghan beat Donegal at their own game.'
