Members of the British Army cleared to play in London GAA championship

A ground-breaking decision.

The British Army's Gaelic football and hurling teams have been affiliated to London GAA following a meeting at Irish TV Grounds last night. The decision came, according to The Irish Post, after London GAA chairman Noel O'Sullivan cast the deciding vote, following a 15-apiece deadlock in the room. It now means the Irish Guards - part of the British Army - will be free to compete at junior level in the 2016 championship, league and cup competitions within London GAA. It has been 14 years since the GAA’s Rule 21, which banned members of the British security forces from playing football and hurling within the Association, was abolished at a congress in Dublin.
