The centre-back will likely be starting alongside Eric Bailly in the centre of defence with Jose Mourinho keeping Phil Jones as his versatile back-up defender.
This means that there will be no more room for Smalling, who has been at the club since 2010.
The player has fallen in and out of favour since Mourinho's arrival and struggled with injury throughout the 2016/2017 season.
The club will be willing to let the England international leave at a price of about £15m.
A number of Premier League clubs are reportedly monitoring Smalling's situation with West Ham, West Brom and Everton all interested in the 27-year-old.
